The last fifty years have seen breath-taking advances in agricultural
science - buf in one important sense these developments are now leadin
g, not so much to a departure from past attitudes and practices, as to
a return to them. Looking back on his professional life as an agricul
tural scientist leads Professor Derek Tribe to conclude that, although
the technologies of farming continue to be modified by new scientific
developments, the basic attitudes of farmers and scientists are going
through a full cycle and are now reverting to what they were fifty ye
ars ago.
