Fm. Lancas et E. Carrilho, EFFECT OF PREIRRADATION WITH X-RAYS ON THE DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL, Journal of radioanalytical and nuclear chemistry, 175(5), 1993, pp. 383-387
Coal is pre-irradiated with X-rays before being submitted to liquefact
ion with the aim to depolymerize (upgrade) the complex network to simp
le chemical species. It was found taht the pre-irradiation enhances th
e liquefaction yield from 48% (liquefaction without pre-irradiation) t
o 65% (after 10 h of pre-irradiation with X-rays). Our data suggests t
hat since pyrolytic bond breaking is considered to be the first step i
n the coal liquefaction process, pre-irradiation with X-rays will crea
te free radicals which then enhance the liquefaction.
