The lack of commercially available computer systems for processing mul
ti-detector microprobe data in real time has forced many users to deve
lop their own control and data acquisition systems and naturally, diff
erent approaches have been chosen by different groups. This paper give
s a brief discussion about the basic hardware concepts adopted by vari
ous microprobe groups.
