Jiw. Watterson et al., INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THE SCHONLAND PROTON MICROPROBE, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section B, Beam interactions with materials and atoms, 77(1-4), 1993, pp. 79-84
Details are given of a new proton microprobe recently commissioned at
the Schonland Centre of the University of the Witwatersrand. The micro
probe line is connected to two accelerators, a 6 MV EN tandem and a 2.
5 MV Van de Graaff machine, for use in both more routine as well as re
search applications. Features of the target chamber allowing for rapid
semi-automatic pump-down and the handling of multiple specimens are d
escribed, and details of the electronics and multi-parameter software
are given. This software allows for the definition of multiple one- an
d two-dimensional gates, and runs under OS/2 on a 80386 based PC. Brie
f descriptions are given of some typical applications to illustrate th
e analytical potential of the system.
