A heavy ion microprobe has been applied for the analysis of human nail
s. The nails were analyzed by PIXE measurements using 3 MeV Si2+ and 2
MeV H+ microprobes. It was found that the 3 MeV Si2+ ions have a high
er sensitivity for sodium and aluminium in nails as compared with 2 Me
V protons. Furthermore, it has been observed, by using 3 MeV Si2+ ions
, that the sodium atoms are distributed uniformly with some depletion
areas and that aluminium atoms tend to segregate in grains with a dime
nsion of a few mum. These grains could not be observed with 2 MeV prot
ons. The advantages of a heavy ion microprobe over a proton microprobe
are demonstrated for this application.
