Abstract
Micro-PIXE and EPMA analyses of platinum-group minerals from placer de posits are being used in an attempt to determine whether the PGM are d erived from ultramafic rocks by weathering, or formed directly in the placer by chemical accretion. Initial results from this combined study pin-point the complementary nature of the two techniques and demonstr ate the greater usefulness of PIXE as an exploratory tool in rapid are al analysis of these compositionally complex minerals.
