An increasing number of food products obtained by means of genetic mod
ifications are being developed. As a result, national and internationa
l regulatory bodies are considering the necessity for additional regul
ations to ensure the food safety of this new class of products. This a
rticle reviews several of the food safety evaluation approaches that h
ave been developed to date, and briefly discusses the research strateg
ies that have been used in the risk evaluation of several genetically
modified products.
