This study explored the dynamics of successful single parenting throug
h in-depth interviews with 26 single parents who were identified as su
ccessful by qualified professionals in a two-state region of the Midwe
st. The following themes for successful single parenthood emerged: (1)
acceptance of responsibilities and challenges of single parenthood; (
2) prioritization of the parental role; (3) consistent, nonpunitive di
scipline; (4) emphasis on open communication; (5) ability to foster in
dividuality within a supportive family unit; (6) recognition of need f
or self-nurturance; and (7) dedication to rituals and traditions.
