Abstract
The proposition is presented, that in multifactorial infectious diseas es, risk factors other than the infectious agents are essential for th e occurrence of clinical disease. The detection of pathogens by labora tory examination cannot therefore provide a definitive diagnosis. This call only be made on the farm and must consider the clinical sign of the disease and the extrinsic risk factors associated with the individ ual farm.
