Small leader-led supervision groups can be used very effectively to su
pervise individual and couple psychotherapy. Although group supervisio
n cannot cover adequately a clinician's entire psychotherapy caseload,
this format offers important case-related and therapist-related advan
tages over individual supervision. The role of the leader is crucial t
o the success of supervision groups. Leadership functions connected wi
th the maintenance of the group contract establish a safe learning env
ironment, insure group survival, and permit the group to make maximal
use of its members. A number of examples illustrate both the importanc
e of group process in supervision groups and the ways in which members
learn from the group experience as well as from their case presentati
ons.
