Jr. Lakowicz et al., DISTANCE-DEPENDENT FLUORESCENCE QUENCHING OBSERVED BY FREQUENCY-DOMAIN FLUOROMETRY, Chemical physics letters, 206(5-6), 1993, pp. 455-463
We describe frequency-domain measurements of the time-dependent intens
ity decays of p-bis[2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)] benzene (POPOP) when collisi
onally quenched by carbon tetrabromide (CBr4). The frequency-domain da
ta reveal the existence of a quenching rate constant which depends exp
onentially on the fluorophore-quencher separation. A distance-dependen
t quenching rate explains the decadesold observation of upward curvatu
re in Stem-Volmer plots.
