The dissociative attachment process in methyl-, ethyl- and t-butyl-chl
oride is observed as a function of gas temperature in an electron beam
experiment. Evidence is presented that the rapid increase in the cros
s sections near 0.8 eV with temperature, observed previously in swarm
experiments in the first two gases, is due to the production of HCl by
decomposition of the parent compound on the walls of the oven.
