Abstract
This paper examines admissible boundary conditions for the quasigeostr ophic psi equations that govern ageostrophic motion. Both the essentia l (Dirichlet-type) and natural (Neumann-type) admissible boundary cond itions are derived from the variational formulations of the psi equati ons. Different ways of extracting the admissible boundary values from observational data are proposed.
