The sediments which accumulate in gully pots can be considered as prec
ursors to sewer sediments. The behaviour, with time, of gully pot sedi
ments is, therefore, pertinent to any study into the polluting potenti
al of sewer sediments. This paper reports the changes in the physicoch
emical characteristics of 12 gully pot sediments that occurred over a
test period of 70 days. There were some indications that ''ageing'' in
creased the COD of the sediments. However, there was little indication
of sulphide formation despite the low redox potentials of the sedimen
ts.
