Abstract
The optical determinants to primary production (irradiance, phytoplank ton absorption, chlorophyll, and quantum yield) are used in a model to compare with measured values of daily carbon assimilation in the Gulf of Maine. The correlation between the optical determinants and in sit u carbon assimilation is 1 : 1 (r = 0.95), supporting a means to predi ct primary production without the use of incubations.
