Abstract
Based on the defence-in-depth safety concept, the role of instrumentat ion and modern information techniques in nuclear powerplants is descri bed. Benefits of limitation and automation measures are explained Less ons learned from previous accidents are used to improve instrumentatio n and control systems and, consequently, diminish the probability of a ccident occurrence. Instrumentation to be used in the case of accident s beyond the design basis is also discussed.
