Technical Processes require expert systems with on-line and real-time
capabilities. As the states of the process change with time, so do the
contents of the expert system's knowledge base. Also, rule-based syst
ems are not powerful enough to satisfy the requirements for an applica
tion to be useful. New paradigms are necessary to cope with the proble
ms. Integration of qualitative and quantitative modelling with respect
to expert system applications to large technical processes is a must.
As processes are event-based, so must be the expert system applied to
it. Moreover, the paper shows that event orientation has a natural so
ftware paradigm as a counterpart: object orientation. A method as to h
ow the dynamical changes in the process are reflected in a dynamical (
time-dependent) knowledge base is also shown.
