A simple mass-transfer model is derived which gives the initial air bu
bble size distributions in a dispersion of air bubbles in water from t
he density/time responses to a step increase of pressure. Bubble size
distributions from the model showed reasonable agreement with direct o
ptical measurements. This work is applicable to dilute dispersions of
bubbles which experience a sufficiently large increase in pressure suc
h that the resulting solution is unsaturated with air.
