An amphiphilic acrylamide monomer containing a vitamin E moiety as the
hydrophobic group and a phosphatidylcholine analogue as the hydrophil
ic group was newly synthesized in high yield. The radical polymerizati
on was carried out in the presence of alpha, alpha'-azobisisobutyronit
rile as an initiator. The obtained monomer and homopolymer were charac
terized by H-1 NMR, IR, and melting points. A stacked bilayer structur
e was proposed for homopolymer from x-ray diffraction analysis. Furthe
rmore, monolayers of the homopolymer were prepared on the surface of w
ater and were investigated at different temperatures.
