Abstract
The mechanisms of failure of externally notched sections of polyethyle ne pipe under pressure have been investigated. Previous communications had suggested that the origins of branching fracture features could b e localized shear deformation and this is confirmed. It is shown that craze-like forms which occur at the crack tip can have a different str ucture to that of a craze.
