Abstract
The NSWWS provides Tier 1 warnings of severe weather to emergency orga nizations and to the public. Flash Messages are issued within six hour s of the event, but Early Warnings, which are sent only to emergency o rganizations, may be issued up to five days ahead. Tier 2 warnings of hazardous conditions are mostly sent to Police and Fire services and t o the BBC Travel Centre. The performance of the service is continually monitored and surveys of recipients are conducted annually. This enab les the level of service provision to be improved to take account of d evelopments in forecasting, communications and the views of recipients . This paper describes the service, summarizes the weather over the fi rst two years of operation, and gives actual case-studies.
