The three-body channel in the S-32 + Sc-45 reaction has been studied a
t 5.6 MeV/u bombarding energy. Fragment-fragment coincidence measureme
nts were performed using two DELTAE(gas)-E(solid-state) detector teles
copes. Data analysis indicates that three-body production results from
a two-step binary process. The excitation energy partition between th
e fragments originating in the first reaction step is found to be comp
atible with the thermal-equilibrium limit.
