Over-expression of the chaperonins GroEL and GroES significantly suppr
essed the temperature-dependent pattern of expression of Cu,Zn superox
ide dismutases in Escherichia coli and increased the yield of active e
nzyme. The results obtained indicate that chaperonins prevent degradat
ion of metal-deficient enzyme molecules. GroEL was shown to form a com
plex with unfolded Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase in vitro, confirming tha
t GroEL can interact with beta-stranded proteins.
