A measurement of the angular distribution (theta) of the crystallograp
hic c-axis of CsCdBr3 has been made using hole-burning Stark spectrosc
opy. Assuming this distribution to be Gaussian, we deduce a characteri
stic r.m.s. width sigma(e) of (11 +/- 2)-degrees. This measurement opt
ically confirms the observation of stacking disorder by X-ray and elec
tron diffraction in a pure crystal of the AMX3 type and shows a new me
thod for the characterization of high crystalline quality.
