Abstract
The basic concept concerning the provision of animals' needs and the a voidance of damage are described. This originates from pure natural sc ience. In the application of the concept consideration must be given t o the >>type<< developed by individuals of a species or breed living i n a semi-natural environment. The definition and application of the te rm >>type<< is described in detail. Housed animals which are not like such >>types<< are living under poor welfare conditions.
