The present review is devoted to the application of modern immunohisto
chemical methods in diagnostic studies in oncology. The wide panel of
monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to tissue- and organ-specific, oncofetal
, tumour-associated antigens is presented. Peroxidase-conjugated plant
lectins with different specificity to carbohydrate moieties of glycos
ilated biopolymers of the surface membranes are described. The role of
endogeneous lectins in carbohydrate-protein interactions between tumo
ur, and immunocompetent cells is shown. Examples demonstrating usage o
f high-specific and sensitive immunocytochemical staining methods (PAP
and APAAP) for early diagnosis of different malignant tumours and met
astases of lymph nodes, bone marrow and serous membranes are adduced.
