Using immunocytochemical methods and carbohydrates attached to biotiny
lated polyacrylamide as the probes, the presence of oligosaccharide-bi
nding molecules on the surface of normal and malignant hemopoietic and
lymphoid cells were revealed. The specificity of the recognition was
demonstrated by inhibition tests in the presence of the excess of low
molecular weight ligands. An analysis of cell phenotype relation with
the expression of carbohydrate-binding molecules was carried out. Prel
iminary data based on the study of carbohydrate structures expression,
show the differentiation of chronic B-lympholeukemia (low expression)
from B-forms of non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas (high expression) a
nd possibly ALL from AML also.
