Modem Greek idhios has different properties depending on its grammatic
al function. Non-Subject idhios must have a binder but it does not see
m to obey the locality restrictions characteristic of anaphors (Iatrid
ou 1986). Furthermore, it cannot occur in embedded questions or relati
ve clauses thought it can be found in noun complement constructions an
d adjuncts. In addition it licenses only sloppy identity interpretatio
ns under ellipsis and cannot tolerate split antecedents. Subject idhio
s differs in every respect. It need not be bound, it can occur in embe
dded questions and relative clauses. It does not require a sloppy iden
tity interpretation under ellipsis and it can take split antecedents.
We show that these properties of idhios follow from the assumption non
-subject idhios is an A'-bound pronoun. We derive the properties of su
bject idhios by showing that it cannot be a bound pronoun as it is sub
ject to an A'-disjointness constraint typical of bound pronouns.
