The triphosphazene (CF3)2P=N=P(CF3)2=N=PPh3 (L), prepared by the react
ion of (CF3)PN3 with (CF3)2P=N=PPh3, has bee found to afford the clust
er [Os3(CO)11{(CF3)2P=N=P(CF3)2=N=PPh3}] (1) with [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)]. B
oth L and 1 have been show by X-ray crystallography to have an unusual
and highly delocalised P=N=P=N=P moiety containing P(IV), P(V) and P(
VI) atoms.
