S. Curry et C. Stoneman, PROBLEMS OF INDUSTRIAL-DEVELOPMENT AND MARKET INTEGRATION IN NAMIBIA, Journal of southern african studies, 19(1), 1993, pp. 40-59
This paper reports on a recent survey of manufacturing industry in Nam
ibia, and uses this and other data to attempt an analysis of the possi
bility and desirability of industrialisation in a very small economy.
The analysis is located in the context of Namibia's long-standing inte
gration with the economy of South Africa, its present membership of th
e Southern African Customs Union, and its membership of developing reg
ional organisations. The constraints on industrialisation are identifi
ed, and the paper concludes with an elaboration of the role that indus
try should play in employment creation and general economic developmen
t.
