A proposed correlation of major Archean shear zones across different m
etamorphic terranes of the central Superior province implies that the
same shear zones are exposed at greenschist to granulite facies. Coali
gnment of the shear zones is recognized after systematic removal of re
gional Proterozoic dextral transcurrent and shortening deformation ass
ociated with the intracratonic Kapuskasing uplift. Subvertical in the
upper crust, the structures become shallowly north dipping at deeper l
evels. The connection of these Archean shear zones provides limits on
any sinistral transcurrent component associated with the tectonic evol
ution of the Kapuskasing uplift.
