The crystalline compound [La(C30H28N2O4)2(H2O)2][La(NO3)6].2H2O.2CH3CN
has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The com
pound contains a complex cation, [La(C30H2gN2O4)2(H2O)2]3+, with a 10-
coordinate lanthanum ion and a hexanitrato anion, [La(NO3)6]3-, with a
12-coordinate lanthanum(III) ion. The coordination polyhedra of lanth
anum in the cation and anion are distorted bicapped dodecahedron and e
icosahedron, respectively. The La-O bond lengths in the cation lie in
the range 2.503(3)-2.771(3) angstrom and the ether oxygens have weaker
bonding than the amide oxygens; La-O distances in the anion range bet
ween 2.618(4) and 2.749(4) angstrom. There are also two lattice water
molecules and two acetonitrile solvent molecules in the asymmetric uni
t cell, which form hydrogen bonds with the complex cations and anions.
