L. Levi et F. Prodi, THE DENSITY OF NATURAL ICE ACCRETIONS RELATED TO NONDIMENSIONAL ICINGPARAMETERS - COMMENTS, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 119(511), 1993, pp. 599-604
The results obtained by applying the various equations relating the ac
creted ice density, rho, to the growth parameters are compared with ea
ch other and with direct experimental results. Special attention is pa
id to the equation recently proposed by Jones, in which, taking into a
ccount an extensive series of results derived from Mt Washington rime
experiments, an attempt was made to relate rho to several thermal and
dynamical non-dimensional parameters, pi(i). It is shown that this equ
ation can lead to large errors, especially at low densities, if the pa
rameter ranges are not those that prevailed in the Mt Washington exper
iments. This disparity arises from basic defects in the physical argum
ents used by Jones to establish the dependence of rho on related pheno
mena. Nevertheless, the attempt at relating rho explicitly to the main
system parameters through the dimensionless products pi(i) is conside
red to be of interest as a possible basis for new studies directed at
obtaining a more general equation for rho(pi(i)).
