J. Abbot et Yp. Sun, DELIGNIFICATION AND BRIGHTENING OF EUCALYPT KRAFT PULP WITH HYDROGEN-PEROXIDE AND UV-RADIATION, Appita journal, 46(3), 1993, pp. 198-202
Under relatively mild conditions (1% concentration, 32-degrees-C), alk
aline hydrogen peroxide delignification and brightening of eucalypt kr
aft pulp were significantly enhanced by UV irradiation at 254 nm. The
pulp was bleached to 81% ISO with 2% peroxide after 10 hours irradiati
on. Hydroxyl radicals appear to be the principal active species in the
UV/peroxide system. Zero span tensile strength and crystallinity inde
x measurements indicate that fibre damage is not appreciable under the
se bleaching conditions.
