In this paper we calculate the translational and rotational friction c
oefficients for a suspended rigid rod as well as its contribution to t
he viscosity in the dilute limit as a function of the aspect ratio. In
the long rod limit the asymptotic behavior is found to be identical t
o Yamakawa's expressions. For finite rods, our results, in particular
those for the translational friction coefficient, reproduce numerical
values obtained by Tirado et al. and differ from the values obtained b
y Broersma using the Oseen-Burgers approximation and from the values o
btained later using the slender body theory.
