Abstract
Benzyl cations and ethylene glycol react in the gas phase and form cov alently bound adducts, as shown by slow and site-selective proton exch ange, but also undergo irreversible hydride transfer giving two ion-ne utral complexes, [PhCH(3) HOCH2CHOH+] and [PhHCH(3)(+) HOCH2CHO], whic h interconvert by a rapid and non-selective proton exchange.
