Abstract
Polarised infrared spectroscopy has been used in the structural elucid ation of the liquid crystalline polyesters. poly(2-phenyl-1,4-phenylen e terephthalate), 2-phenyl-1,4-phenylene-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate) a nd the copolyester containing both terephthalate and biphenyldicarboxy late units. Order parameters have been calculated and the dichroic beh aviour of the vibrational modes used to give valuable insight into the polymer chain structure.
