ESR technique has been used to study the kinetics of methyl radicals d
ecay at 90 K in glassy ethanol-1,2d(5) with an admixture of diethyl et
her and C2H5OH ethyl alcohol. It has been demonstrated that methyl rad
icals migrate freely throughout the sample. The migration rate strongl
y depends on sample prehistory. The preliminary annealing at reaction
temperature and/or the spontaneous cracking of matrix lead to a decrea
se in migration rate. The experiments indicate that the mechanism of r
adical migration in glassy ethanol differs considerably from that in g
lassy methanol. The probable reasons for this difference have been con
sidered. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
