Heart rates for four fishers (Martes pennanti) were recorded while the
animals were on a treadmill. Gaits used and the average speeds at whi
ch they occurred were: walk (3.4 km/h); trot (5.2 km/h); trot and half
-bound combination (8.3 km/h); half-bound with some bounding (9.4 km/h
). Exercise heart rates increased linearly with speed and ranged from
120 beats/min at rest to 389 at the highest test speed. All regression
models of heart rate and speed for individual animals and all animals
combined were statistically significant.
