Dl. Krasne et al., DIAGNOSIS OF SYNCYTIAL (LACUNAR CELL PREDOMINANT) NODULAR SCLEROSING HODGKINS-DISEASE BY FINE-NEEDLE ASPIRATION - A CASE-REPORT, Acta cytologica, 37(3), 1993, pp. 418-422
We report a case of syncytial nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease dia
gnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy. To our knowledge, the cytolog
ic findings of this unusual histologic variant have not been reported
previously. We believe this entity represents a serious potential pitf
all to the aspiration cytologist who targets lymph nodes. This report
describes the cytologic features of syncytial nodular sclerosing Hodgk
in's disease and emphasizes the need in general for moderate conservat
ism in fine needle aspiration biopsy interpretation in patients withou
t a previously documented malignancy. It also demonstrates the superio
rity of tissue sampling with fine needle aspiration biopsy when compar
ed to incisional biopsy.
