Water dissociation on 0(n x l)-Ag(110) phases has been studied as a fu
nction of oxygen coverage and surface temperature by He scattering at
thermal energy and photoemission spectroscopy. A new phase of OH with
(I X 1) periodicity with respect to the Ag(110) substrate has been obs
erved following H2O adsorption at T(s) = 130 K on the 0(2 x 1) phase a
nd annealing at T(s) = 210 K. OH groups arrange in chains along the [1
10BAR] direction. Hydroxyl groups strongly interact along the chain as
shown by the dispersion of electronic states along [110BAR].
