The requirements concerning quality assurance have increased considera
bly in the field of immission control. Well founded values for detecti
on limits and confidence limits have to be given. Based on the statist
ical analysis of long term data series of deposition measurements of p
article mass (Bergerhoff method), lead, cadmium, zinc and thallium per
formance characteristics were established for very differently pollute
d sites. The resulting detection limits as well as confidence limits a
re low enough for a reliable control of the respective immission limit
values. It is further shown that the use of plastic buckets instead o
f the glass buckets required by the VDI guideline or the addition of a
protecting agent to avoid freezing does not affect the measurements s
ignificantly.
