Abstract
A general framework for manipulating spectra as functions in tradition al multivariate methods such as PCA and PLS is described. The function al representation is very convenient for compression, ensuring smoothn ess and continuity. There are two fundamentally different types of rep resentations: (a) by functions and (b) by function coefficients. The u se of coefficients is the most practical way of analysis.
