Abstract
This paper explores how and to what extent qualitative ethnographic me thods of data collection in the social sciences may be integrated with survey methods to produce a research instrument. It presents an appro ach to assessing the cultural sensitivity of a survey instrument that was developed and tested in an ethnographic study of health seeking am ong elderly Hispanics in East Harlem, New York City, and considers som e of the practical and theoretical implications of the process.
