We present a mean-field study of the layer magnetizations of a semi-in
finite Ising model with intra-surface J(s) and surface-bulk J1 interac
tion modified with respect to the bulk exchange interaction J. This al
lows to discuss the extent of the spatial inhomogeneity perpendicular
to a free surface. By following the magnetization of each layer, we ar
e able to see how the critical exponents evolve from the bulk to the s
urface values. Furthermore, we introduce a new characteristic temperat
ure, T(em), where the surface magnetization departs from the bulk beha
viour, as a possible candidate for the experimental determination of J
(s) and J1.
