Data from applied geology (eg. geological reports, maps, cross section
s and well logs) can be stored in the relational database GEODATA. It
can help the geologist to retrieve data from regions of interest and u
se them with other computer programs. To this aim a datamodel has been
created where the geological report represents the top level. Title,
author, date, coordinates, keywords, a short abstract and a list with
enclosures are some of the fields in this table. Geologicaly relevant
information such as descriptions of enclosed maps, cross sections, wel
ls and analytical results are stored in related tables. The table that
contains geological information for each stratigraphic layer at a giv
en location in the ground is at the core of the database. Information
in coded form is used as little as possible in order to increase the r
eadability of the database. Most of the descriptive information is ent
ered as plain text without abbreviations, that is copied verbatim from
the geological description in the report. This accounts for the subte
lties in different geological descriptions.
