S. Echevarria et al., ANALYSIS OF 100 TUBERCULOUS INFECTIONS IN HIV PATIENTS A CANTABRIAN HOSPITAL, Revista Clinica Espanola, 192(6), 1993, pp. 274-279
In our setting, patients infected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV
) show a high rate of tuberculosis infections which manifestations dep
end on the level of immunodeficiency reached. Method: Clinical, radiol
ogical and evolutive characteristics are discussed of 100 diagnosed tu
berculosis in seropositive patients during a time span of 52 months, r
elating them to the number of CD4 detected. Results: Tuberculosis pulm
onar forms (65%) were more frequent than extra-pulmonar ones (35%) eve
n in the advanced phases of the disease due to HIV, even tough the lat
ter tend to cluster in patients with less than 200 CD1/mm. An unspecif
ic febrile syndrome, normal results on simple radiological exploration
and the difficulty to obtain diagnostic samples are facts which often
delay th diagnosis. Conclusion: Even tough the extra-pulmonar forms a
re more frequent in the last stages of the disease due to HIV, in our
setting there is still a high incidence of pulmonar forms in all stage
s.
