The kinetics of the reduction of iodine by hydrogen peroxide has been
studied at pH 7 and 8 using a stopped flow spectrophotometer (millisec
ond time scale). The influence of the initial concentrations of iodine
, hydrogen peroxide and H+ ions, has been determined by measuring the
initial rate of iodine decay. A value of the rate constant of the elem
entary step of iodine hydrolysis in the presence of OH- ions has been
deduced ( (7.0 +/- 0.5)x10(7) mol-1.1.s-1). The reaction scheme of the
hydrogen peroxide initiated iodine reduction and the role of iodine h
ydrolysis are discussed.
