Between 1987 and 1991, 13 Community Support Program demonstration proj
ects served I, 157 young adults with co-occurring severe mental illnes
s and substance use disorder The service demonstrations and related pr
ogram evaluations provided a watershed in the development of dual-diso
rder services and research. The service demonstrations showed that sub
stance abuse treatments could be integrated with components of outpati
ent mental health services and that motivational interventions were fu
ndamental. The Program evaluations showed that clients could be engage
d in integrated community-based services, with the possibility of conc
omitant reductions in hospital use, improvements in severity of substa
nce abuse, and gains in other areas. The program evaluations also eluc
idated several assessment issues for future dual disorder services res
earch.
