Abstract
The analysis of the coherent optical reception process using notions a ssociated to the theory of aperture antennas is presented; the effects of the complex spatial distributions of the optical fields across the wavefronts are studied. An experiment for the measurement of the dire ctivity of a heterodyne photodetector is described and results on its reception diagram and noise characteristics are given.
